Challenge Overview

TopCoder utilizes the Amazon Web Services Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) for many of their development environments. Currently only selected TopCoder administrators have access to launch and terminate EC2 server instances. The ?TopCoder Cloud VM (Amazon EC2) Manager? application will allow TopCoder administrators to assign these tasks to selected members (VM Managers). It should be capable of supporting multiple AWS accounts with multiple images available to each account. It should have granular control over what AWS images can be launched or terminated. It should be modular in design so other AWS features could be controlled in the future. Initially, only launch and terminate functions for EC2 services needs to be supported. An admin should see all instances belonging to each account and the particular owner of each instance. The main motivation to introduce this ?TopCoder Cloud VM (Amazon EC2) Manager? is that we want to avoid giving out the TopCoder key for the AWS EC2 service to multiple users. Beside the obvious security issue we wouldn't have control or be able to track who is launching VM's for which contest. The ?TopCoder Cloud VM (Amazon EC2) Manager? application will be part of the new TopCoder Direct site.
