With less than 24 hours to go, here is the score distribution.

Tomorrow we can start talking about the problem.

Here is the score distribution for Algorithm Round 2B. Once again in Round 2, there was a substantial shift in the score distribution between the provisional scores of the submissions and the final scores of the correct solutions.

And here is the detail plot of the battle for the 50 top scores to advance to Round 3. Read More >

Algorithm round 2B

Those who did not previously advance to stage 3 had a new chance yesterday. As science has not yet invented a better way to spend a Saturday day, it was a welcome thing to do. Predictably so, I will have to try harder in round 2C. But 50 much better coders were able to show their worth and advance.

Algorithm Round 2B is About to Start

It is about nine hours to the start of Algorithm Round 2B. Once again we have an Algorithm track round happening at a time that overlaps a Marathon track round. There just aren’t enough weeks in the year to keep them separate. Although there is no Google code jam round this weekend, there are some other contests running, so it is quite possible to stay very busy competing without even working on the current Marathon round. It sounds like a job for a clone army.

I expect to be trying my best to advance to Round 3, but that seems increasingly unlikely. I barely made it into Round 2. I would like to blame this on the ever increasing skill levels of the competitors, because it couldn’t possibly be because I am getting older  and I am distracted by other commitments and have hardly practiced or competed at all recently. Hey, that’s my story and I am sticking to it.

Reminder: Want to win free stuff from TopCoder? Participate in my handle survey. Enter early and avoid the rush.

When I was a kid my sweet grandma told me that I should always return a greeting to those who say “Hello” to me. Studio says “Hello” to us in so many ways and sometimes we are not able to notice it. When you browse the Studio site it says “Howdy you, there are contests waiting for you”, “Hi there, check these new opportunities here”, “Welcome to Studio Topcoder”. Seriously, check the site right now if you don’t believe me, I took a screenshot just in case they remove the hellos while you’re reading this.

Marathon Round 2 is Underway

Marathon Round 2 is already up and running. It does not seem like the little holiday between Round 1 and Round 2 was very long at all. Where does the time go? Well, I know where a lot of the time is going for the next two weeks.

Once again we have an interesting single person game as the problem. Both problems involved selecting a sequence of moves. The Marathon Round 1 problem had everything known at the start of the problem. You had the full time think about what ever you wanted, possibly starting over several times and then you returned your complete solution, possibly all in the last millisecond. Marathon Round 2 is different. Here you return each step separately and you do not know which new piece you will be placing on the next move until you have finished placing the previous piece. You will have to make 10,000 separate moves sequentially without any possibility of back-tracking. So the flavor of the two problems is quite different. We can’t really discuss the problem in any more detail for the next two weeks, but I encourage you to take a look at the problem statement and to give it a go. If you are not eligible for the TCO12 Round 2 you can still compete with the same problem in Marathon Match 76.
